What is Gemini?
Gemini is Google's AI model, available as a chat assistant via gemini.google.com and as an AI component integrated into virtually all Google products. It is Google's answer to ChatGPT and Claude — and it has a unique advantage: deep integration with the Google ecosystem that billions of people use daily. Gemini thinks, writes, analyzes images, searches the web and is built into Gmail, Docs, Drive, Meet and more.
How does Gemini work?
Gemini is built as a multimodal model from the ground up: it is not a language model to which image processing was later added, but a model that natively processes text, images, audio, video and code. The latest generation, Gemini 2.5, includes reasoning models that think step by step — similar to OpenAI's o1/o3 series.
Through the Google Workspace integration, Gemini can summarize emails in Gmail, draft documents in Docs, analyze data in Sheets and summarize meetings in Meet — all via a simple instruction.
