Artificial intelligence (AI) refers to computer systems that perform tasks that normally require human intelligence: reasoning, learning, planning, problem solving, understanding language and recognising images. The modern wave of AI is based on machine learning — systems that learn from large amounts of data instead of being programmed with fixed rules.
The breakthrough of recent years is due to deep learning: neural networks with dozens of layers that recognise patterns in text, images, audio and video. The Transformer architecture, published by Google in 2017, forms the basis for virtually all modern AI applications: from ChatGPT and Claude to Gemini and Midjourney.
Generative AI — AI that creates new content — is the category that broke through in 2022 with ChatGPT and has been growing exponentially ever since. Where AI previously mainly classified and predicted, it can now write, draw, compose, program and reason in a way that is increasingly difficult to distinguish from human work.

Frequently asked questions about AI
Artificial intelligence is the field that develops computer systems that perform tasks that normally require human intelligence: learning, reasoning, planning and problem solving. Modern AI is largely based on machine learning, where systems learn to recognise patterns from enormous amounts of data.
AI is the broad term for systems that simulate intelligent behaviour. Machine learning is a subfield where systems learn from data without being explicitly programmed. Deep learning is a specific technique within machine learning, based on deep neural networks. Deep learning powers virtually all modern AI breakthroughs.
ChatGPT (OpenAI) and Claude (Anthropic) are both large language models from different companies. Claude is known for strong instruction following, safety and excellent performance on long documents. ChatGPT has a broader ecosystem of integrations. For most users, both are excellent choices.
Many AI tools have a free basic version: ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Meta AI (via WhatsApp/Instagram), Perplexity, Stable Diffusion (fully open source), Whisper (open source), Suno and Canva AI. Premium versions offer more features and higher limits.
AI brings both opportunities and risks. Short-term concerns: deepfakes, disinformation, privacy and job insecurity. In the long term, experts are concerned with safety issues around more autonomous AI. Companies such as Anthropic focus specifically on safe AI development.
