What is artificial intelligence?
Artificial intelligence (AI) refers to computer systems that perform tasks that normally require human intelligence: reasoning, learning, planning, problem solving, understanding language and recognising images. The modern wave of AI is based on machine learning — systems that learn from large amounts of data instead of being programmed with fixed rules.
The breakthrough of recent years is due to deep learning and the Transformer architecture (Google, 2017), which forms the basis for virtually all modern AI applications — from ChatGPT and Claude to Gemini and Midjourney. Generative AI broke through in 2022 with ChatGPT and has been growing exponentially ever since.
