Artificial intelligence is the field that develops computer systems that perform tasks that normally require human intelligence: learning, reasoning, planning and problem solving. Modern AI is largely based on machine learning, where systems learn to recognise patterns from enormous amounts of data.

AI is the broad term for systems that simulate intelligent behaviour. Machine learning is a subfield where systems learn from data without being explicitly programmed. Deep learning is a specific technique within machine learning, based on deep neural networks. Deep learning powers virtually all modern AI breakthroughs.

ChatGPT (OpenAI) and Claude (Anthropic) are both large language models from different companies. Claude is known for strong instruction following, safety and excellent performance on long documents. ChatGPT has a broader ecosystem of integrations. For most users, both are excellent choices.

Many AI tools have a free basic version: ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Meta AI, Perplexity, Stable Diffusion, Whisper, Suno and Canva AI. Premium versions offer more features and higher limits.
