Stable Diffusion and ChatGPT
Stable Diffusion democratizes image generation as an open source tool; ChatGPT reaches 100 million users in two months in November — the fastest growth of a consumer application ever.
The year AI became visible
2022 was the year AI broke through to mass consciousness. Two events defined it: the open-source release of Stable Diffusion in August, and the launch of ChatGPT in November. Together they demonstrated that AI could generate convincing images and fluent text — and that these capabilities were available to anyone, for free or nearly free.
Stable Diffusion
Stable Diffusion was a latent diffusion model developed by Stability AI, with academic roots in CompVis at LMU Munich and Runway ML. Unlike DALL-E 2 (OpenAI) and Midjourney, Stable Diffusion was released as open source — the weights were freely downloadable and could be run on a consumer GPU. This democratization was transformative: within weeks, the community had built interfaces, fine-tuned models, and created tools for image editing, inpainting, and style transfer. The open-source AI image generation ecosystem exploded.
ChatGPT
On November 30, 2022, OpenAI launched ChatGPT — a chatbot built on GPT-3.5, fine-tuned using reinforcement learning from human feedback (RLHF) to be helpful, harmless, and honest. Within five days it had one million users; within two months, 100 million — the fastest adoption of any consumer application in history, surpassing TikTok and Instagram. For the first time, a large language model was accessible to anyone via a simple chat interface, and it was genuinely useful for writing, coding, research, and conversation.
The world changed
ChatGPT made AI a mainstream topic. Newspapers, politicians, schools, and companies began taking AI seriously in a way they hadn't before. It triggered a wave of investment, competition, and regulation discussions. It also caused panic in education — teachers worried about AI-written essays — and in creative industries worried about AI-generated content. The AI era had begun in earnest.
