What is n8n?
n8n (pronounced "nodemation") is an open-source workflow automation tool that combines the flexibility of coding with the accessibility of no-code. It distinguishes itself from Zapier and Make by the ability to self-host, add code steps to workflows and build AI agents. n8n is particularly popular in the AI community for building complex AI workflows.
How does n8n work?
n8n works on the basis of visual workflows (called "workflows") that connect nodes to each other. Each node represents an action — an API call, a transformation, a condition or an AI step. Nodes are connected and configured via the drag-and-drop interface.
The platform has more than 400 built-in integrations and also supports JavaScript/Python code steps for maximum flexibility. The AI Agent node makes it possible to build fully autonomous AI agents that can use tools, make decisions and execute multi-step tasks.
Core features
- Self-hosting — run entirely on your own servers for privacy
- 400+ integrations — broad app support
- Code steps — JavaScript/Python in workflows
- AI Agent nodes — build autonomous AI agents
- LangChain integration — build complex AI chains
- Vector stores — build RAG workflows
Comparison with Zapier and Make
n8n is more technical than Zapier and Make but offers maximum flexibility. Self-hosting makes it free for personal use. It is the best choice for developers and technical teams who want to build advanced automation or AI workflows.
Advantages
- Open-source and free to self-host
- Maximum flexibility via code steps
- Best AI workflow support on the market
Disadvantages
- Steeper learning curve than Zapier or Make
- Self-hosting requires server management
Pricing
Self-hosted version free and open-source. Cloud version available from approximately $20/month.
Who is it for?
n8n is ideal for developers, technical teams and AI enthusiasts who want maximum control over their automation workflows and want to build AI agents without vendor lock-in.
