With 405 billion parameters, Llama 3.1 is the first open model at frontier level.
On July 23, 2024, Meta released the Llama 3.1 collection, including for the first time a model with 405 billion parameters alongside 8B and 70B.
Open at frontier level
The 405B model was the largest and most powerful freely available model and matched closed top models on many tasks. The context window grew to 128K tokens and eight languages were supported.
Open vs. closed
The release fueled the debate over whether open models could keep up with closed competition — which they increasingly did.
