What is Socratic?
Socratic is an AI learning app from Google designed for high school and university students. The app combines camera-based text recognition with AI to explain homework problems. Students take a photo of an assignment — math, chemistry, biology, history or literature — and receive step-by-step explanations, visual aids and links to additional learning resources.
How does Socratic work?
Socratic uses OCR (optical character recognition) to identify the text or mathematical formulas in a photo, and then links this to an AI explanation module. The system does not simply give the answer, but explains step by step how to arrive at the answer. This promotes understanding rather than simply copying answers.
For mathematical problems, Socratic generates graphs and visual representations. For conceptual questions, it links to relevant YouTube videos and extensive text explanations from trusted educational sources.
