What is Khanmigo?

Khanmigo is Khan Academy's AI tutor, built on GPT-4. It is designed to support the Socratic learning model: instead of giving direct answers, Khanmigo asks questions that help the student reach the correct insight themselves. This fundamentally distinguishes it from ChatGPT, which gives quick answers but may thereby shorten the learning process.

How does Khanmigo work?

Khanmigo is integrated into the Khan Academy platform and has access to the full curricula in mathematics, physics and chemistry, economics, computer science, history and other subjects. When a student gets stuck on an exercise, they can ask Khanmigo for help.

Instead of providing the solution, Khanmigo asks questions like "What do you already know about this concept?" or "What do you think the first step would be?" The system guides the student step by step toward the solution, while keeping the cognitive effort with the student.
