With o3, OpenAI takes a step toward models that think longer and better at the end of 2024.
On December 20, 2024, on the last day of "12 Days of OpenAI", OpenAI announced the reasoning model o3. It was seen as the most talked-about AI finale of the year.
Thinking before answering
o3 spends compute on an internal reasoning step before answering. Through this "test-time compute", the model delivered strong performance on mathematics, scientific reasoning, and coding.
Record score on ARC-AGI
On the challenging ARC-AGI benchmark, o3 scored 87.5% in a high-compute configuration, well above the 85% considered "human level". This surprised many researchers and fueled the debate on how close AI is to general intelligence.
The beginning of reasoning models
o3 confirmed a new direction: not just larger models, but models that use thinking time more efficiently. In 2025, competitors followed with their own reasoning models, from DeepSeek R1 to thinking modes in Gemini and Claude.
