OpenAI releases GPT-5, with major advances in reasoning and reliability.
On August 7, 2025, OpenAI launched GPT-5 and made it immediately available in ChatGPT. It was the successor to the GPT-4 family and was considered one of the most important model releases of the year.
Stronger in reasoning
GPT-5 combined fast responses with a deeper reasoning mode. The model automatically switched between quick replies and longer thinking, and performed better on science, mathematics, planning, and coding than previous GPT models.
Fewer mistakes
OpenAI emphasized reliability: fewer hallucinations, better factual understanding, and clearer answers. This made the model more useful for business and professional applications.
Toward AI agents
GPT-5 could autonomously handle more complex, multi-step tasks — an important step toward AI agents that complete entire assignments rather than answering individual questions. Later updates such as GPT-5.1 added separate 'Instant' and 'Thinking' modes.
