Anthropic introduces Claude 3 Opus, Sonnet, and Haiku — three models for a wide range of tasks.
On March 4, 2024, Anthropic launched the Claude 3 family: Opus, Sonnet, and Haiku. It was Anthropic's first model that could compete with the best of OpenAI and Google across broad benchmarks.
Three models
Opus was the most powerful model, Sonnet the balanced mid-tier, and Haiku the fastest and most affordable. All three were multimodal and could process both text and images.
Why it mattered
Claude 3 firmly established Anthropic as a serious challenger and introduced strong performance on long documents and reasoning.
