What is Tesla Optimus?
Tesla Optimus (also known as Tesla Bot) is a humanoid robot developed by Tesla, designed to safely navigate and perform useful tasks in a world built for humans. Tesla CEO Elon Musk positions Optimus as potentially the most valuable product Tesla will ever produce — a universal worker that can take over "physical work".
How does Tesla Optimus work?
Optimus uses the same AI technology base as Tesla's self-driving cars: computer vision, neural networks and autonomous decision-making. The robot uses cameras instead of LIDAR for environmental perception — an approach Tesla also uses with its vehicles and that is scalable in production.
Training takes place via imitation learning (the robot learns by mimicking human movements) and reinforcement learning (learning through trial and error in simulated environments). Tesla has deployed Optimus in its own factories, where the robot performs tasks such as sorting battery components.
Core features
- Humanoid form — works in human environments
- Computer vision — environmental perception without LIDAR
- Manipulation — picking up and placing objects with precise hands
- Walking and navigating — stable walking in complex environments
- Task execution — factory work and possibly household work
Status
Optimus is currently in production pilot at Tesla's Fremont factory. Tesla plans mass production of thousands of robots in 2025 and possibly tens of thousands in 2026. Commercial sales are planned for the future.
Who is it for?
Optimus targets manufacturing and logistics companies. In the long term, Tesla also aspires to the consumer market (household work).
