What is Med-PaLM 2?
Med-PaLM 2 is Google's specialized language model for medical applications. It is built on the PaLM 2 base model and specifically trained and refined on medical literature, clinical guidelines and medical exam questions. In comparative tests, Med-PaLM 2 scored at the level of trained physicians on medical exams — a significant breakthrough illustrating the possibilities of AI in healthcare.
How does Med-PaLM 2 work?
Med-PaLM 2 is trained on an extensive dataset of medical texts: scientific articles, clinical guidelines, medical textbooks and anonymized patient records. Moreover, the model has been refined through a process in which medical experts evaluated and corrected the answers — similar to RLHF but specifically focused on medical accuracy and safety.
The model can answer medical questions, interpret symptoms, discuss treatment options and summarize medical literature. It is available via Google Cloud for healthcare institutions.
Core features
- Medical Q&A — answers clinical questions at physician level
- Medical summarization — summarizes clinical literature
- Symptom analysis — interpretation of symptoms and clinical pictures
- Multimodal — also analyzes medical images
- Multilingual — available in multiple languages
Applications
Med-PaLM 2 is used for clinical decision support, medical education, summarizing patient records, and as an assistant for medical personnel in clinical environments.
Limitations and safety
Google emphasizes that Med-PaLM 2 is a tool and not a replacement for a physician. The model can make errors and must not be used for direct diagnostics or treatment decisions without human supervision.
Who is it for?
Med-PaLM 2 is available for healthcare institutions, medical researchers and caregivers via Google Cloud. It is not directly available to consumers.
